Enclave on Oakes is an ode to my first music club haunt.

In the mid-1990s I started making music. My junior summer in high school I started hanging out at a makeshift club in the downtown area called the Enclave. An unused basement in a forgotten building. A lot of great bands played there but mostly, my friends and I were there during the weeknights with the regulars.

I spent a lot of time listening to older folks rip out jazz and funk tunes, driving them to liquor stores for gas money and hearing their life stories along the way. I wrote Enclave on Oakes a couple years later.

The Enclave was in a block of old abandoned buildings, with a popular nightclub called the Reptile House at the other end of the block. I had a blast exploring all the old abandoned buildings, one being a large hotel with a ballroom frozen in time and ruin. Some nights I'd climb up the fire escape and walk the block of buildings rooftop to rooftop until I got to the nightclub. There I'd climb in the window of the abandoned upstairs and listen to the band playing, watching the run down city glowing in the night.
