I was 21, working third shift at a very small gas station on a highway off ramp. My son was just over a year old and the local police department gave me a garage door remote looking device to press if I got robbed.

I sat there drawing, and writing songs. Sitting behind a cramped gas station counter with no glass or any kind of protection. Day dreaming (can you do that a night?) wondering when I'd see my family next and what lay ahead as I watched the world digitize itself.

My feet callused hard from the quickening pace
eyes burning wet from the chemical haze
I climb up this hill to look down from above
surfing on a cloud of technological love

Smoke stacks heart attacks, statistics galore
from the second we're born, we have a foot out the door
wired this, wired that, they gave my dog a brain implant
now rover too has joined the race, his programmed tongue to lick my face

Now, my eggshell car has an artificial brain
and I can't loose control, even in the acid rain
so I coast through the streets, of this concrete entity
looking at reflections of what used to be me
